「何が難しいんですか？」と言うかもしれません。「Yes か No を言うだけなら難しくありません」と言うと思います。残念ながらそれほど単純な話ではありません。実は私達ネイティブスピーカーは、”Yes”や”No”と言った、単純な答え方は避ける傾向があるのです。と言うのも英語において、”Yes”や”No”は無礼で乱暴に聞こえる事があるからです。

次の例を見てください。

William : Is Nina at the Children’s center? Wendy： Yes. (or No.)

この状況では、”Yes””やNo”と言う返答は、非常に唐突な印象を受けます。そのため、少し印象を和らげるために次のように答えます。

William : Is Nina at the Children’s center? Wendy： Yes, she is. (or No, she isn’t.)

“Yes””やNo”とと言う表現が唐突すぎる印象を与えないように、”Yes””やNo”の他に言葉を足しているのがわかると思います。英文法ではこのように追加された言葉を”Tag”と呼びます。この”Tag”とは、”Yes””やNo”と言う答えに付け加えられた尻尾のようなものです。ここで問題になることは、学習者は「どのような”Tag”を追加した良いかわからないと言うことです。

効果的な”Tag”の練習方法をお伝えします。Yes/No疑問文の最初の言葉を聞いて、”Tag”にも同じ言葉を使うのです。例えば、

William : Has Wendy gone to a meeting? (The first word is “has”) Wendy： Yes, she has. (ここでは同じ表現（has）を”Tag”として用います)

William : Has Sherise gone to a meeting? (The Wendy： No, she hasn’t. (ここでは同じ表現（has）を”Tag”として用います。否定文で使われています)

それでは、これらの疑問文の中で最初に使われている表現は何でしょうか？

Can Dean use computers well” Does William work at the Reception Desk? Does Sharon work at the reception desk? Will Dean work at the Sheraton for a year? Will Dean work at the Sheraton for the rest of his life?

このような疑問文で使う必要のある”Tag” は以下のになります。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　Yes, he can. No, he can’t. Yes, he does. No, she doesn’t. Yes, he will. No, he won’t.

もちろん、明確な例外もいくつかあります。

ARE you working in the restaurant this evening, Wendy
– Yes, I AM./No, I’M not.

WERE you at the Children’s Center this morning, Nina?
– Yes, I WAS./No, I WASN’T.

Also if you are offered something with the word ‘would’, it isn’t always polite to answer “Yes, I would” or “No, I wouldn’t”:

WOULD you like some fries, Kevin?
– YES PLEASE. (rather than “Yes, I would.”)

WOULD you like some fries, Elena?
– NO THANK YOU. (rather than “No, I wouldn’t.”)
